Starting this winter (2024/25), if you live in England or Wales, you’ll only be able to get a Winter Fuel Payment if you meet the following criteria:
- Age Eligibility: You must be over State Pension age.
- Benefit Eligibility: You should be receiving one of the following benefits:
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Pension Credit
- Universal Credit.
The Winter Fuel Payment is designed to help older people with their heating bills during the colder months. If you meet the eligibility criteria, you should have received a letter in October or November specifying the amount you’ll receive. However, if you didn’t receive a letter but believe you’re eligible, you can check if you need to make a claim.
Remember that there are other forms of assistance for heating bills as well, such as the Cold Weather Payment (for certain benefits recipients when the temperature drops to zero degrees Celsius or below for 7 consecutive days) and the Warm Home Discount (a £150 discount on bills for those receiving Pension Credit or living in a low-income household). Additionally, local councils may offer support through the Household Support Fund based on their specific rules.
Stay warm and take advantage of the available support! 😊
