IMD Weather Alert: Heavy Rain Expected in 9 States, Including Delhi – Check the Forecast for Your Area
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert, predicting rain and snowfall in various regions from Monday to Thursday, particularly in the hilly areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
In Delhi, the day started with mild sunshine on Monday, resulting in a minimum temperature of 11.4°C, which is 3.8°C above the usual temperature for this time of year. This provided some relief from the cold, although a light fog persisted in several parts of North India, including Delhi. At 8:30 AM, Delhi’s relative humidity was recorded at 91%. The IMD forecasts clear skies for the rest of the day with temperatures possibly reaching a maximum of 26°C. However, rain and snowfall are expected in the hilly regions, which may lead to a drop in temperatures and an increase in the cold weather again. The IMD predicts that temperatures could fall by three degrees by the weekend, potentially reaching 8°C.
In Himachal Pradesh, the minimum temperature was recorded 3 to 6 degrees above normal at many locations, offering some relief from the severe cold. Despite this, no significant change in maximum temperatures was observed. The local weather station anticipates rain and snowfall in higher elevations on Monday and Tuesday, with light to moderate snowfall expected on Wednesday and Thursday. The IMD has also forecast a cold wave for the lower hill areas on Friday.
Meanwhile, in Rajasthan, dense fog continued to cover many regions on Monday. The IMD reported that fog persisted in areas such as Pali (6.8°C), Jaisalmer and Ganganagar (8.9°C), Pilani (9.2°C), Sirohi (9.3°C), and Alwar (9.6°C), while Jaipur’s minimum temperature was recorded at 14°C. A new western disturbance is expected to bring rain to areas like Jaipur, Bharatpur, and Bikaner on January 22.
When and Where Is the Rain Expected?
The IMD’s latest forecast indicates rain and snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand between Monday and Thursday. Additionally, light rain is expected in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Chandigarh on Wednesday and Thursday. Some areas of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and western Uttar Pradesh may also experience light rain during this period.
What Is Behind the Weather Change?
The ongoing weather changes are linked to an active western disturbance, currently located 1.5 km above the mean sea level over western Rajasthan and parts of Pakistan. This has led to the formation of a cyclonic circulation in the region. A second western disturbance is developing along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, creating a sub-jet stream over northwest India. As a result, the IMD expects winds to move from West Uttar Pradesh through Delhi, Haryana, and Rajasthan, triggering rain this week.
